“I’m trying very hard to save money (and be able to afford my rent each month). I’m trying to avoid taking taxi’s — but I’m also trying to avoid being killed. How late is too late for a single woman to take the subway? I have friends that ride it 24-7 and other friends that won’t get on after 11?” -Kayla

It depends what train you are riding and how comfortable you feel. I take it 24/7 and have never felt scared, because I think New York is very safe.
I am male, but I would say until midnight on weeknights and 1AM on weekends on a rule of thumb.
But this surely depends on the train and how crowded it is.
When it gets late try to stay in crowded cars, the car with the conducter, and walk out out onto the street with others around you…even if it may not be the most convenient exit.
