Once home to primarily Irish freight-workers, Chelsea has grown over the years into a cultural center anchored by its large LGBT population. For the art-minded, Chelsea boasts over 370 galleries in its western area alone as well as two art museums. Some other area attractions include Chelsea Markets; where residents can buy anything from fresh fish at the seafood shop to economy-size jugs of Nutella at the Italian grocery store; Chelsea Studios, former home to TV shows as varied as Ricki Lake and the Martha Stewart Show; the High Line, an elevated freight railroad redeveloped into a running path; and the Joyce Theater, a major home for modern dance. Residentially, Chelsea offers up pricey lofts and luxury doorman buildings in some of its more hip areas as well as cheaper rentals in some of the dodgier spots, but is becoming increasingly developed towards a young, artsy crowd. Check out Chelsea if you want to live amongst a booming cultural and celebratory scene.
