East Harlem, also known as Spanish Harlem, is one of the largest Latino communities in Manhattan. Once known as Italian Harlem (the original Patsy's Pizzeria still stands as a remnant of these times), Spanish Harlem's Latino population grew in increasing numbers during immigration after World War II, drastically changing the area's demographic. In the 1960s and 19070s, the neighborhood declined into a dangerous area of drugs, gangs and vast poverty but has been working its way out of troubled times thanks to the help a growing population and several initiatives by the government to build affordable housing and provide loans to small business owners in the area. Easily accessible by subway, East Harlem is becoming increasingly popular as an up-and-coming neighborhood for people looking for an affordable alternative to lower Manhattan, and now boasts several new condo and rental buildings. Nearby national brand stores such as Target and Home Depot draw residents for convenience as does the area's diverse cultural experience.
