Greenwich Village, often referred to as The Village, is one of the more expensive residential areas in Manhattan, and for good reason. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Village became a popular home for bohemian culture and the art community thrived there. In recent years, the liberal community created during earlier years has drawn a wealthy residential crowd, which includes many famous celebrities, fashion designers and other artists of the non-starving variety. Many of the streets have a desirable small-city feel, different from the high-rises of other areas in the city. Restaurants, designer shops and a popular bar scene also draw crowds to the Village - a popular spot for a weekend stroll or a long-term stay.
