Inwood is the northernmost neighborhood on the island of Manhattan and is bounded by water on all three sides - giving it a somewhat secluded feel and also making it less accessible to lower Manhattan and therefore more affordable than other neighborhoods. While still a mainly low-income and Spanish-speaking area, Inwood's real estate value has risen moderately and the Western portion of the neighborhood has seen some influx of young singles and families in recent years. Attractions in the area include several parks, The Cloisters (the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Medieval art and culture building, a year-round farmer's market, and the Columbia University athletic fields.) Notably, basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar grew up in the neighborhood's largest public housing development which contains a basketball court popular among streetball fans.
