The Lower East Side, or LES, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city and has historically been a lower-working class and ethnically diverse section of New York. While several immigrant populations have inhabited the LES over the years, it holds a particularly strong history amongst it's Jewish population and is home to landmarks such as Guss's Pickles (birthplace of NYC-style pickles); Kossar's Bialys (the oldest bialy bakery in the United States); and Katz's Deli (famous for both its pastrami sandwiches and the fake-orgasm scene from When Harry met Sally). Starting in the early 2000s, the influx of hip restaurants, bars, music venues and retail in the East Village began to move into the LES and it has since become one of the trendiest areas for nightlife in Manhattan. Always energetic and brimming with a young and lively crowd, the LES has also remained relatively low-cost for downtown Manhattan residences.
