The Meatpacking District is in the lower-western portion of Midtown Manhattan and derives its name from the 1900s when it was home to over 250 slaughterhouses and meat-packing plants. In the 1980s, it was known as a center for drug-dealing, prostitution and sex clubs. When many high-end boutiques and trendy nightclubs began to move into the area in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the neighborhood went through a transformation, becoming one of the most popular areas for nightlife and high-end dining in NYC. Pricey studios and luxury condos are becoming increasingly popular in the area for residents and its cobblestone streets are lined every night with revelers waiting to get in the door at their favorite clubs.
