Murray Hill was once "uptown" Manhattan when the city ended at 5th Avenue and 42nd street in the nineteenth century. During this time, brownstones were built to house the upper-middle class population of the area and the neighborhood remained a quiet residential spot for much of the twentieth century. In the past 20 years or so, it has become incredibly popular among recent college-grads and professionals in their twenties, bolstered by a large bar scene and reasonably priced housing comprised mainly of modern mid and high-rises. The Southern portion of the neighborhood is sometimes referred to as Curry Hill for its high-concentration of Indian restaurants and grocery stores. The majority of Murray Hill is consistently abuzz with a young crowd.
