Roosevelt Island is a small island off the East coast of Manhattan between Manhattan and Queens. Throughout history, the island was home to everything from an insane asylum to a smallpox hospital to hospitals and jails, and its first residential building was not constructed until 1975. One year later, a sky tramway was opened to transport residents and visitors from the island to Manhattan and the island is still accessible via the tram, or subway or bridge. In the past 20 years, parks, promenades, playgrounds and many more residential buildings have been built on the island along with the grocery stores, banks and other necessities to support it. Due to it's relative seclusion from the rest of Manhattan, real estate on the island has remained relatively low and residents can afford many amenities in some of it's luxury buildings that may be out of their price-range elsewhere.
