Stuyvesant Town and neighboring Peter Cooper village are two giant residential complexes running on the East Side of Manhattan from 14th Street north to 23rd Street and between 1st Avenue and Avenue C. They were first built in the 1940s for World War II veterans and their families and were sold in 2006 by MetLife to Tishman Speyer Properties in the largest real estate deal for a single American property in modern times. In 2010, Tishman Speyer gave control of the property to it's creditors after several years of a lawsuit from its rent stabilized residents. The lawsuit made market rate apartments rent stabilized until sometime after 2017, making apartments in Stuy Town rather affordable for their location and size. The neighborhood includes several self-contained amenities such as a produce market, gym, concierge service, Zip Car rentals, summer outdoor concerts and a resident study-lounge, as well as access to plenty of green space.
